LongHorn vs Hono
LongHorn builds on Hono rather than competing with it. Hono is a small, fast web framework on Web Standards, and LongHorn adds application lifetime, dependency injection, native hosts and optional modules around a real Hono app.
How they relate
app.http in LongHorn is a real Hono app, so Hono routers and middleware work directly.
| LongHorn | Hono | |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Application framework built on Hono | Web framework |
| Runtimes | Node, Bun, Deno, Cloudflare Workers | Those four, plus others such as Fastly Compute, Vercel, Netlify and AWS Lambda |
| Routing and middleware | Hono's own | Built in |
| Beyond HTTP | Lifecycle, DI, database, auth, queues, schedules, outbox, observability | Not its focus: you bring your own |
| Maturity | Early alpha, first release on npm | Established |
Use Hono alone if
- You need HTTP routing and middleware, and little else.
- You deploy to a runtime LongHorn has no host for.
- You need something proven in production today.
Add LongHorn if
- You want startup, shutdown and draining handled in order.
- You want durable jobs, outbox delivery and safe retries, and can accept alpha status.
